John Singer Sargent may not have had the most accurate brush strokes and definitely was not the most consistent portrait artist ever. Yet, at his best he captured his subjects in an almost magical way: flushed cheeks, fluid lines, perfectly asymmetrical expressions. I find it hard to imagine that these people are not still breathing.
