Neil Young is taking up a lot of my time these days. I’m starting to realize how much he influenced the bands I listen to, and have started to feed off some of that ancient energy. In particular Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere bowled me over. Then I came across this interview with Frog Eyes frontman Carey Mercer on papermag, and got smitten with the hammer of lucidity:
LH: I like that a Frog Eyes show can go either way… I like bands that seem combustible on stage. Like Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
CM: It’s funny you should say it. The CD [Tears of the Valedictorian] is loosely assembled around the structure of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, with those kind of book-ending long songs. There are a few “Cinnamon Girls” on there, a few quieter ones. It’s not a song-for-song mirroring, but I think that record more than anything else really hit me. I could listen to it over and over again. When I said I wanted to make a record with a bit of shelf life, I think that’s what I mean. That record was the beacon for me. His approach and his career is really inspiring.
By the way, Frog Eyes’ new record Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph just came out on Dead Oceans and it is so good it causes brain damage.
