The new album by The Walkmen, You & Me is sublime - it’s their best work yet.
If the first couple of tracks don’t grab you, hold on for the rest of the ride, as it picks up on “The New Year” and keeps going. Hamilton Leithauser doesn’t have the world’s most subtle vocal instrument at his disposal, but I have much respect for men who lay it on the line as much as he does. AutoTuned masses, cower at his feet.
Sonically speaking the whole thing is perfectly recorded. It’s an absolute treat to listen to, in particular when compare to A Hundred Miles Off which erred too much on the “let’s make this sound brighter” side. It’s got this warm slinky thing going on to perfectly complement the mood of the songs that albums in the Digital Age (including some I’ve mixed) sorely lack.
I dropped five bucks on it a couple weeks ago on Amie Street - the proceeds of which went on to benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (a place I’ve visited once or twice) - and I do believe I will pick up a physical copy once I’ve got the means.
